Back from DrupalCamp Montreal

I had a great time last week-end at DrupalCamp Montreal! It was an awesome way for me to perfect my skills in making ever more beautiful, functional and safe websites using Drupal.
About 140 people showed up, we had a great time and exchanged a lot of tips and tricks!... I attended 10 sessions over the week-end and would just like to highlight my favourites ones. Overall, the quality of the presentations was very good, however because of where I am at with Drupal and also what I am interested in some sessions were even more awesome for me

  • I attended two sessions from the e-learning institute at Penn State University folks, Michael Collins and Bryan Ollendyke who presented respectively on navigation techniques and the Network Manager module (developed by Bryan). I got to see how they manage a large number of sites from only one Drupal installation and how easy it is to create a new site with the Network Manager module.
  • The two people that really blew my mind by the quality of their presentations, and also because the topic was perfect for me are Michelle Lauer and Jake Strawn from Common places e-solutions. Michelle talked about Views and how to do tricky arguments and relationships with the module. Awesome! Jake presented on the new Omega theme that he developed, based on the 960 grid system. The base-theme looks amazing and I am eager to try it out.
  • I really appreciated hearing Mathieu Petit-Clair from Koumbit.org talk about migrating from any CMS to drupal using the Table wizard and Migrate modules. Very informative presentation!
  • I got to hear about Subversion from Andrew Berry. This topic is still a little advanced for me, and I know it is the way I need to go to streamline my workflow and painlessly manage many websites quickly and safely...
  • And last but not least I got very excited and impatient during Angie Byron's presentation on Drupal 7 and the improvements to Drupal's 'awesomeness'. I wish I could start building websites with it right now, unfortunately, I will have to wait until the first stable release comes out, 'sometime next year'.

Not sure this is part of the sessions, but we also got to hang out and network at the great micro-brewery Benelux on Saturday night.
So here you go, I will definitely try to make it next year, and I also hope we can organize a DrupalCamp Ottawa!...
